About Telesat Lightspeed
"Deliver enterprise-grade, carrier-class LEO connectivity with guaranteed quality of service for the world's most demanding applications."
Telesat, founded in 1969 as a Canadian Crown corporation, is one of the world's oldest and most experienced satellite operators. For decades, Telesat operated geostationary satellites serving broadcast, enterprise, and government customers. The Lightspeed constellation represents the company's ambitious pivot to LEO.
Unlike Starlink and Kuiper, which target consumers, Lightspeed is designed specifically for enterprise and carrier-grade quality of service. Each of the 198 planned satellites features four 10 Gbps optical inter-satellite laser links, enabling high-bandwidth mesh networking in orbit. MDA was selected as prime contractor to build the constellation.
Development has faced delays. ASIC component issues pushed the pathfinder mission from mid-2026 to December 2026, and commercial service from 2027 to Q1 2028. Despite the delays, a CA$1 billion order backlog demonstrates strong market demand for the service.

For context: Netflix 4K needs ~25 Mbps, video calls need ~5 Mbps. Latency under 100ms is good for gaming; under 300ms works for video calls. GEO satellites (600ms+) have noticeable delay on interactive tasks.
